PLNDR.com was founded almost two years ago in May 2010. Karmaloop’s sister flash site, the site just surpassed one million members in February. PLNDR is an exclusive, members-only online boutique which offers its customers the best streetcar swag from various brands at prices up to 80% off. They host limited time sales which are usually between 48 and 72 hours. PLNDR prides itself on taking an “old survival strategy” and legalizing it. Back then, pirates would take on the seas searching new “land, loot, and opportunity.” In the same sense, PLNDR finds the best apparel, shoes, and accessories to share with their members.
Just how does PLNDR have so much success in an industry that is characterized by low barriers of entry, high advertising costs, and limited offerings? Competing against flash sales sites such as RueLaLa, Gilt, and JackThreads, PLNDR has managed to grow to well over one million members in under two years and continues to expand by the day. As a marketing intern at PLNDR, I can tell you it’s truly their marketing strategies and their loyal member base. Together with low prices, PLNDR likes to market to campuses by doing fun events. For example, I’m currently working on an inter-university competition for Women’s History Month and also brainstorming a major event on BU campus in the upcoming semester. PLNDR knows its target audience and knows how to reach them with weekly giveaways and contests with prizes. In addition, PLNDR also really cares about their members. They constantly brainstorm ideas that will keep their customers engaged and feel exclusive, such as their current sticker contest where people submit their designs for a new sticker and the winner gets a $150 credit to use on the website as well as the recognition of their design as the new official PLNDR sticker. It’s just all those fun things and their competitive natures that capture their member base and keep them coming back for more and more.
